"The purpose of this volume is to view the world of 1792-1793 through the eyes of a contemporary reader of the London daily press" (vii), writes the author in the Preface to this extraordinarily detailed chronological examination. In other words, the author prescribes to a view of history in which the public perception of events at that period is at least as important and consequential as factual occurences. Werkmeister begins his work with background about the political scene and the nature and biases of various newspapers, including the names of proprietors, writers and other pertinent individuals.

The author organizes the rest of the book according into sections based on prominent debates and media events such as the Proclamation Against Seditious Writings, newspaper reactions to a Fox-Pitt coalition, and the First, Second and Third Prorogations, giving details of coverage by both Ministerial and Opposition newspapers on each subject. A Newspaper History of England, 1792-1793 includes a near-daily chronology of these two years, an index, and a bibliographical note on other relevant secondary sources.
