Revolutionary Nuptials
Hannah More

Brief Biography

Hannah More was the fourth daughter in her family. Her father, a schoolmaster, tutored all of his daughters but stopped teaching Hannah mathematics and Latin because she became inappropriately good at them (Beauchamp 203). Some critics have compared More's piece, "Strictures on the Modern System of Female Education" (1799), to Wollstonecraft's Vindication of the Rights of Woman. More, an Evangelical philanthropist, relied more on Christianity in her work than writers like Wollstonecraft, who drew from many religions. Additionally, although More agreed with Wollstonecraft on issues of women's education, she held a more conservative point of view on women's public roles and the French Revolution.
