Revolutionary Nuptials
by Betsey Blanche

Introduction

This site intends to examine the role of women and the beginning of feminism* by examining the views of the institution of marriage in the 1790s. By showing the time's opinions of this one issue, the project will also address the roles of religion, education, slavery and revolution. I have chosen four 1790s texts, both from the United States and England, which address marriage in the context of the time and which show the author's theoretical beliefs on the institution.

*It should be noted that using the word 'feminism' in reference to the 1790s is technically anachronistic. The word was first used in the late 1800s and originated from the French. However, it is accurate to say that these authors laid the groundwork for modern feminism.
