Letter to the Authors of The Republican
July 2, 1791
Paine begins his letter to the Authors of the Republican by offering his aid to their cause of promoting a republic over a monarchy. He then continues by proving, through an
ideological discussion of government, that he is in fact a republican. Summing up his argument, he claims, "The system of Representation is the strongest and most
powerful Center that can be devised for a Nation" (378).
