Letter to George Washington
London, May 1, 1790
Here Paine tells Washington of the Marquis de Lafayette's plan to present to the President of the United States the Key to the Bastille and a drawing of the prison. Paine believes
this is a sensible gift, largely because it is clear "the principles of
America
opened the Bastille" (374). He therefore
urges Washington to accept the key and congratulate the French Monarchy and National Assembly "on the happy example they are giving to Europe" (374). Paine then goes on to tell
Washington about his own doings on his bridge and in France.
