Investigation 3: Ethical issues

Summary: Read about ethical issues in interaction design and complete Grinnell's IRB training.

Collaboration: You should complete this assignment individually, although you may discuss it with anyone you like.

Due: Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2:15 p.m.

Assignment

1. Read ID 7.1 - 7.3 (p. 290 - 297) to get a very brief overview of data collection techniques used in interaction design.

2. Read ID 13.2.5 (p. 633 - 639) to consider the role of ethical issues in interaction design. (We'll revisit this again as you are planning evaluation work for your projects.)

3. Complete Grinnell's Ethics Training Module, which must be completed before undertaking any research involving human subjects at Grinnell College. To access the Ethics Training Module, log in to PioneerWeb and click on the link to "IRB-Ethics Training" under "My Organizations. Begin by clicking on the link to Module 1 at the left of the screen; continue through all four modules. Finally, take the Ethics Test.

If you have completed the Ethics Test within this past academic year for a different class, please just review the materials.

4. Based on your knowledge so far, how do you think the ethical issues for interaction design differ from ethical issues for some other field, such as psychology, medicine, or anthropology? Why is ethics nonetheless an issue for interaction design?

You do not need to be familiar with all the details of research in the other particular field; I just want to get a sense of your thinking. Write no more than one page.

Turning in your work

Please print the web page giving your score on the Ethics Test and your response to part 4.  Bring them to class.

Assessment

Students will receive 10 points for successfully completing the Ethics Test---which is required to continue in the course. Students will receive 5 additional points for a thoughtful response to part 4.
