Week 2: Foundation (2)
Summary: We
consider network implementation and performance, and where Internet
protocols come from.
Goals:
- Review or get your first look at the socket abstraction.
- Practice working with key network performance parameters.
- Learn about the (perhaps surprising) process by which
Internet protocols are designed and standardized.
Looking ahead:
- On to Week 3, Direct Link Networks (1)
Monday, January 26: Implementation & performance
Read:
- P&D,
1.4 - 1.6, p. 30 - 51.
Briefly answer
the following questions. Send your answers in the body of
an email to me (davisjan@cs.grinnell.edu)
by 11 a.m. Please use "CSC-364 01-26" as the
subject line of your email. For problems, give your answer and explain
your approach.
- P&D exercise 1.6
- P&D exercise 1.8
- P&D exercise 1.10
- What is the most important thing that you learned from the
reading?
- What's a question you still have about the reading?
- About how long did you spend on the reading and problems?
Tuesday, January 27, 5 p.m.: Abstract 1 due
Submit an abstract
of the following paper, distributed in class last week.
- D. Clark (1988). The design philosophy of the DARPA
Internet protocols. Proceedings
of the SIGCOMM '88 Symposium, 106 - 114.
Wednesday, January 28: How protocols are made
Read:
- RFC
3160 (there is a newer version - check BCP listing)
- P. Barsook (1995). How
anarchy works. Wired 3.10.
Briefly answer
the following questions. Send your answers in the body of
an email to me (davisjan@cs.grinnell.edu)
by 11 a.m. Please use "CSC-364 01-28" as the
subject line of your email. For problems, give your answer and
explain your approach.
- What's your reaction to all this? Can a volunteer
organization really control a technology?
- What is the most important thing that you learned from the
reading?
- What's a question you still have about the reading?
- P&D exercise 1.16
- P&D exercise 1.19
- About how long did you spend on the readings and problems?
