Weeks 9 - 10

Goals:

• Read about location technologies.
• Pre-register for spring.
• Complete your annotated bibliography.
• Draft your third paper.

News and announcements

• Remember that pre-registration cards are due to the Registrar's office by 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 13. This is a hard deadline; the office will close at 5 p.m.

• Consider attending the following campus event(s). For "short assignment" credit, email me a one-paragraph report giving your reaction to the event. 

• In today's Convocation, Thomas O. Melia will spack on "Democracy Promotion in a Time of Transition."

• At 5 p.m. Friday in the Faulconer Gallery, artist Tracy Hicks talks about his installation still/LIFE . At 1 p.m. on Sunday Nov. 2 at the Mayflower Homes Activity Center, he will demonstrate his method for taking casts of endangered frogs without harming them. See the Campus Calendar for more information.

• In next Thursday's Convocation, Rebecca Goldstein will speak on "Modern Philosophy and the Rise of Secularism."

• At 5:30 on Sunday Nov 8, go to the ISO Food Bazaar at the Harris Center and learn about food from different places around the world. (I believe tickets are required.)

• Does anyone have any events this weekend they would like to invite their classmates to?

Tuesday, November 4: Location technologies; emphasis

Prepare for class by doing the following.

• Write a plan for your third paper as described in the assignment sheet.

• Read Lesson 6, "Emphasis," in Style.

Wednesday, November 5: Annotated bibliography due

Please print your annotated bibliography and turn it in to my office by 5 p.m.

Thursday, November 6 and Tuesday, November 11: Individual conferences

Each student will meet with me to discuss classes for spring.  You may not preregister until you obtain my signature.

Please bring your two-year plan, your course schedule, and your registration card filled out in pencil. I may ask you to come back for a second meeting after making some changes.  You may also schedule a short meeting in office hours sooner than this if you'd like some help getting started.

Class will be cancelled to make time for these meetings.

Thursday, November 13: Peer conferences; concision

Prepare for class by doing the following.

• Print four (4) copies of the first draft of your third paper. That's one copy for yourself, two for me, and one for a classmate to read.

• Read Lesson 7, "Concision," in Style.

Looking ahead:

• A thesis and opening paragraph for the "Anatomy of a research paper" will be due on Wednesday, November 19.
• Your second field note will be due by the final Thursday of the fall semester.
