Project, Phase 1: Project Proposal

Assigned: Tuesday, 8 April 2003
Due: Friday, 11 April 2003

Over the next few weeks, I'd like you to focus your outside-of-class time for this class on doing something new and different. With a small group of colleagues (no more than four in a group), design an interesting program. You might:

• Generate an interesting image manipulation in the Gimp.
• Write a Web service, such as a simple course recommendation service.
• Write a text-based game.

In the past, students have written

• a program that transforms an image into a spiral,
• a program that draws simple figures based on user-selected parameters (e.g., clothing color),
• an interactive tic-tac-toe game (in the Gimp!),
• a Hot or Not site (which stores ratings in a Scheme file),
• a college recommendation service, and
• a simple chat room.

Here's the approximate schedule:

• Friday, 11 April 2003: Basic project proposal.
• Friday, 18 April 2003: Preliminary implementation.
• Friday, 25 April 2003: Nearly-final implementation.
• Monday, 28 April 2003: Public presentation in class (I'll provide refreshments and invite others).

Your basic project proposal should include:

• The list of students working on the project.
• A one- or two-paragraph summary of the purpose of the project.
• A list of the procedures you expect to need (no, you don't need the full six P's, just a quick summary of their purpose).
• An indication of what you expect to have done for the preliminary implementation.
• A fall-back subproject in case you can't get everything you want working.

Make sure that you spend some time thinking about the project and that your proposal reflects that thought.
