BIO/CSC295 2011F, Class 25: Time for work on projects

Overview:
* Time to work on projects.

Admin:
* Project presentations next Tuesday.
* Project reports next Thursday.
* Notes on the portfolios are now available.
* On Thursday, Paul Tymann of RIT will speak to us about "Designing Databases for Genetic Monitoring".
* Do you want to give elevator talks to Tymann, or would you prefer to use the time to work together?  TIME TO WORK TOGETHER.
* Sam remains behind in his grading.  Sorry.  Project 7.5 should be returned tonight.
  * We do want to get everything back to you by Thursday.
* EC for incredibly long swim meet from Friday night to Saturday night
* EC for band concert in Herick at 3pm on Saturday.
* EC for singers concert of the Messiah on Sunday at 2pm.
* Our final is scheduled for Wednesday, December 14 at 2pm.
  * Our official alternate time is 2pm Friday, December 16 
    (cue evil laughter)
  * But we would be amenable to students taking it during our other
    finals (Thursday at 9 am or Thursday at 2pm), but then you only
    have one of us answering your questions.

Designing Databases for Genetic Monitoring

Bioinformatics researchers have to interpret, manage, and maintain an
ever increasing amount of data generated by the scientific equipment
used in their labs.  While software accompanying this equipment helps
scientists to understand the results of an experiment, often this
software does not link results with information pertinent to the source
of the data.  This talk will discuss the design and implementation of
two database systems that are being used to help manage the workflow in
a bioinformatics lab and provides a mechanism for scientists to tie the
results to the organisms from which the data was collected.
