Summary: Today we consider the purpose and components of a liberal arts education. Such consideration will help prepare you as you plan your schedules for this year and the future.

• Miscellaneous Assignment 11: Tentative Schedules (due Thursday).
• Miscellaneous Assignment 12: Editing Essays (due Thursday).

Notes:

• Mr. Stone will join us for the beginning of class today. We'll therefore cover topics in a different order than normal. In particular, administrative stuff will happen in the middle.
• There is convocation this week. Plan to attend.
• We'll use meeting times this week to discuss preregistration.
• Make sure to include your name, the date, and the assignment at the top of every essay. When you revise an essay, change the date!

The Diebold Case

Goal: Explore the topic for approximately 30 minutes.

• Background
  • Describe the case for your colleagues who didn't do the work.
  • What are the key IP issues from the reading?
  • What issues are there other than IP in this case?
• IP Perspective
  • Do you think the publication of these memos falls under fair use? Why or why not?
  • What do you think of the point that the way in which these memos was obtained affects the interpretation of the case?
• Institutional perspective
  • Why do you think Swarthmore has been so proactive in preventing links to the materials?
  • What do you think Russell will do if Diebold sends Grinnell a Cease and Desist letter?

Administrative Details

I expect that it will take about fifteen minutes to go through the various administrative details related to today's class.
