Time Management Exercise 2: Summarizing Logs

Conducted: Thursday, 18 September 2003

Summary: In this exercise, you will summarize your time logs using an associated form.

Purposes: (1) To help you begin to reflect on how you spend your time. (2) To provide the basis of further discussion.

Supplies:

Warning: We may be distributing some of our work in this exercise to each other. Rather than writing your name at the top of each page, please write some symbol that you can later use to identify your page, but that others cannot use to identify you.

Part A: Basic Activities

A.0. Write your identification symbol on every page.

A.1. On the first page, write the following across the tops of the blank columns:

A.2. In each row on the column labeled Bed, enter the time you went to bed the previous night.

A.3. In the Awake column, enter the time you woke up.

A.4. In the Slept column, enter the total amount of time you slept at night. (Yes, you should be able to compute it immediately from the previous two numbers.)

A.5. In the Naps column, enter the amount of time you spent napping each day.

A.6. In the Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner columns enter the time at which you ate those meals. If you missed a meal, put an X in the box.

A.7. In the Exercise column, enter the amount of time you exercised. (If you want to note what kind of exercise you did, that would be great, too.)

A.8. Hand your sheet to Mr. Rebelsky, who will mix them up and distribute them.

A.9. Read the sheet you receive. Be prepared to discuss it.

Part B: Class and Other Work

B.1. Choose column headings that relate to your classwork. I would suggest that you have a separate column for each class you're taking, but you can choose any categorization that you deem appropriate.

B.2. Create another column heading for your regular work. If you have more than one job, add a heading for each job.

B.3. Fill in the information as appropriate.

B.4. Be prepared to discuss how much time you spend per class per week.

B.5. We may look at these sheets in more depth in our individual advising sessions.

Part C: Everything Else

C.1. Add column headings for other aspects of your life (e.g., socialization, watching movies, making art).

C.2. Fill in the amount of time you spend each day on each activity.

C.3. You are not required to discuss these aspects of your life with the class, but you may choose to do so if you wish.

C.4. I will ask you to reflect on these sheets in our individual meetings.
