Preliminaries

8:00-8:10

• Rewrites of your essays are due Tuesday.
• I apologize for the really stupid typo in the etiquette essay.
• More reading for Tuesday!
• Sign up for weekly advising appointments, which start today!
• Richard Fyffe, Librarian of the College, may join us today (and for future sessions).
• Wiki seems to be working.
• We may not explicitly discuss Writing in College or SamR's Insane Syllabus - one goal is that you sometimes learn outside of class.

Handouts

• Revised version of homework 2.
• Two copies of the writing rubric.

Editing

8:10-8:40

• Sit in groups of three.
• For each of your group-mates' papers, fill out a writing rubric.
• Spend some time talking to each other about what you learned from the rubrics.
• Sam should scan through the papers to find sentences for the final exercise.

Debriefing

8:40-8:50

• Did theses match?
• What structure did essays have?
• What were "cool" sources your peers used? (You may not suggest your own.)
• What did you learn from this exercise?
• Did I really need tom ake you kill trees.

Why Write?

8:50-9:00

• Writing is the core of Tutorial
• Why?
• In particular, why does Grinnell care that you write, and why should you bother writing?
• Resources for thinking about this question include the Williams article, the College handbook, and more.

The Audience

9:00-9:10

• Whenever you write, you have an audience.
• Good writers pay attention to their audience.
• How can we use knowledge about the expected audience?
• How might having a particular audience hinder us?
• Who do you see as the audiences for the readings we have done?
• What about the way the authors write supports (or fails to support) those audiences?

IP Basics

9:10-9:35

• What is the thesis of this article?
• Where does the thesis appear?
• How do they support that thesis?
  • That is, what is the structure of their argument?
• What does the article tell you about the purpose of IP law?
  • And what is the key quote from the U.S. Constitution?
