DrFu on the Mac

An experimental version of DrFu for the Mac is available as a Disk Image. In the image is a single folder, called DrFu. Please drag the whole folder to somewhere on your computer. (And remember where you dragged it.) Inside that folder, you should see two things: a copy of GIMP (with the DrFu extensions) and a copy of DrScheme (with the DrFu extensions). It is important to keep these two things inside the DrFu folder.

This experimental version requires an Intel-based Mac with OS X 10.4 or above. It is being developed and tested on Intel-based Macs running OS X 10.4

Starting DrFu on the Mac

To start DrFu on the Mac, you need to follow a more complex process than you do on the Grinnell Linux workstations.

• Make sure you have the X11 display server on your Mac. On most Macs, this application can be found in the Applications/Utilities folder.
  • If you don't have X11, it should be possible to install it from the install disks that came with your Mac.
• Double click on GIMP. The first time you start it, it may take awhile.
• When the GIMP finally starts, select Xtns->Script-Fu>Start Server
• A dialog box should appear asking for a server port and server logfile. Leave the port set at 10008 and the logfile blank.
• Open the DrFu/PLT Scheme folder. Double click on DrScheme.
• When DrScheme opens, set the language to DrFu, click Run, and you should be set to go.

Updating DrFu on the Mac

We tend to update DrFu daily and hope to update the disk image weekly. If you want more frequent updates (probably necessary for Grinnell students) or don't want to re-download the huge file, you can try the following:

• Open a terminal window. (The Terminal application is in the Applications/Utilities Folder.)
• Switch to the DrFu directory.
  • For example, if your username is Smith, and you put DrFu-Mac in your home directory, you would write
    cd /Users/Smith/DrFu/
    
  • If you put DrFu in your Applications folder, you would write
    cd /Applications/DrFu/
• Type the following to incorporate updates.
  svn update
