SamR's Schedule, Spring 2013

This is a rough draft of my schedule for Spring 2013. As with all of my schedules, it is subject to frequent change and may only vaguely approximate my actual schedule. Many activities---such as grading, writing, and more class preparation---take place during evening hours.

For those who have to schedule meetings (and I do not envy you): I prefer to be scheduled in the Open slots. If those do not work, try my research times next, then class prep time. Finally, if no other options are available, you can schedule during office hours.

Teaching

I am teaching four courses this semester:

• CSC 195.01, Technologies for Mediascripting, a special topic course on technologies related to my scholarship. Topics will include (a) the internals of PLT Scheme/Racket, (b) selected GIMP internals; and (c) the D-Bus inter-application communication system. Meets Thursdays from 1:15 to 2:05 in Science 3819.
• CSC 295.02, Life Beyond Grinnell: Learning from Alumni, a special topics course in which alumni speak to students about their careers. Meets Mondays from 2:15-4:05 in Science 3821.
• CSC 295.03, Profesional Practice: A Philosophy of Unix, a special topics course in which I help students better master the skills in C and Unix I expect our graduates to have. Meets Tuesdays from 1:15 to 2:05 in Science 3819.
• CSC 295.04, Women and Computing (aka CS Table). Computer Science Table is a weekly lunchtime meeting of CS students and faculty, held in a public dining room in the Joe Rosenfield '25 center (aka Joe's Quarter). This semester, the subject of CS Table is Women and Computing and it is being offered as a one-credit course.

I am also supervising a variety of independent study and MAP projects. These typically meet in my office (Science 3824) or lab (Science 3823).

Art Classes

My scholarship is increasingly focusing on connections between computing and the arts. Therefore, I am sitting in on two art courses this semester (one studio, one history).

• ART 232 - Art Since 1945. Meets WF 8:00-9:50 in Bucksbaum 245.
• ART 246 - Digital Media. Meets TuTh 8:00-10:50 in the Forum Creative Computing Lab.

Other Activities

• Bowling. Participating in the College's bowling course/activity. Wednesdays and Fridays starting at 3:15.
• Class prep. Preparing for one of the classes that I teach. Experience shows that the typical one-hour class takes two to three hours of preparation, so not all class prep is shown on this schedule. (Feel free to come visit me for questions during these times, but realize that I may be too busy.)
• Convocation. A campus-wide lecture, usually of general interest. Because of an unexpected vote of the faculty, we no longer have weekly convocation, but there are other talks scheduled at that time, so I may be at those, too.
• Department Meeting. The Computer Science department meets every week on Tuesdays to discuss departmental issues.
• Division Meeting. The Science division meets on one Monday a month (usually the second).
• Faculty Meeting. The campus-wide faculty meeting, held every other week.
• Kids. Spending time with my kids, who get done with school at about 3:15 each day.
• MathCounts!. Coaching the Grinnell Middle School MathCounts! team.
• Office Hours. Priority time for meeting with students. (I also have an open office policy -- if I'm in my office and not too busy, I'm happy to talk to my students.)
• Open. Sorting through mail, doing a little research or programming, catching up on class preparation, running errands, fixing Web pages, etc. etc.
• Organization. Attempting to organize the chaos that is my office and lab.
• Research. When I hope to get some work done on one of many research and writing projects. Unfortunately, usually time for me to catch up on my class prep.
• Science Teaching. A discussion group on science teaching that meets at various times.
• Special Faculty Discussions. In the past, we've had special faculty discussion on Mondays (sometimes at noon, sometimes at 4:15).
• Thursday Extras (CS). Departmental talks, primarily aimed at undergraduates.
