SamR's Schedule, Fall 2011

This is a rough draft of my schedule for Fall 2011. As with all of my schedules, it is subject to frequent change and may only vaguely approximate my actual schedule. Many activities---such as grading, writing, and more class preparation---take place during evening hours.

For those who have to schedule meetings (and I do not envy you): I prefer to be scheduled in the Open slots. If those do not work, try my research times next, then class prep time. Finally, if no other options are available, you can schedule during office hours. If none of that works, please contact me.

• Class prep. Preparing for one of the classes that I teach. Experience shows that the typical one-hour class takes two to three hours of preparation, so not all class prep is shown on this schedule. (Feel free to come visit me for questions during these times, but realize that I may be too busy.)

• Convocation. A campus-wide lecture, usually of general interest. Because of an unexpected vote of the faculty, we no longer have weekly convocation, but there are other talks scheduled at that time, so I may be at those, too.
• CS362-01. Teaching Computer Science 151, a first course in computer science, in Science 3819.
• CS295-01. Teaching Biology/Computer Science 295, Bioinformatics, with Vida Praitis, in Science 3819.

• Faculty Meeting. The campus-wide faculty meeting, held every other week.
• Office Hours. Priority time for meeting with students (I also have an open office policy -- if I'm here and not too busy, I'm happy to talk to my students).
• Open. Sorting through mail, doing a little research or programming, catching up on class preparation, running errands, fixing Web pages, etc. etc.
• Organization. Attempting to organize the chaos that is my office.
• Research. When I hope to get some work done on one of many research and writing projects. Unfortunately, usually time for me to catch up on my class prep.
• Thursday Extras (CS). Departmental talks, primarily aimed at undergraduates.

• Backgammon. Supervising the Grinnell Middle School backgammon club.
• MathCounts!. Coaching the Grinnell M iddle School MathCounts! team.
• Kids. Spending time with my kids, who get done with school at about 3:15 each day.

• CSFS Meetings of the Committee for the Support of Faculty Scholarship. These meetings are assorted Mondays, from 3-5 pm.
• Department Meeting. The Computer Science department meets every other week on Tuesdays to discuss departmental issues.
• Division Meeting. The Science division meets on one Monday a month (usually the second).
• FOC Meetings of the Faculty Organization Committee. These are likely to be scheduled on Fridays at lunchtime.
• Special Faculty Discussions. In many years, we've had special faculty discussion on Mondays (sometimes at noon, sometimes at 4:15).
• Science Teaching. A discussion group on science teaching that meets at unknown times. Wednesdays.
• Faculty Lunch. The regular faculty lunch in faculty house which I try, but often fail, to attend.
• Assessment Task Force. Biweekly meetings of the Grinnell College Assessment Task Force.
• Computer Science Table. A weekly informal meeting of CS students and faculty at JRC.
• Meet with Vida Praitis. Meetings with Vida Praitis to work on the design of bioinformatics.
