Periodically, the Mathematical Association of America prepares a basic list of mathematics books recommended for inclusion in an undergraduate library. These books can form the basis for a core collection. Also, some colleges and universities consult this list in assessing their collections.
An Essential Computer-Science Book List could have a similar role.
