``It was not for this that he threw his mango at the Resident's car''

In the ``offstage plot'' of Indian ink, the Rajah of Jummapur imprisons the painter Nirad Das for six months (as described on p. 24) for participating in a political protest and throwing a mango at the car of the British government's local representative (as described on p. 59).

What were the political developments that prompted protests like the one that Das joined? What were the circumstances that led the local authority to impose such a penalty on protesters? Describe the historical context of these events.

Write up your answer and have it ready to turn in at the beginning of class on November 14. It should be legibly typed or set, double-spaced, with ample margins (I recommend an inch and a quarter at top, bottom, and sides). If it runs to more than one page, each page after the first should bear your surname and a page number in the upper right-hand corner.
