In the era of electronic publishing, academic authors run a substantial risk of sacrificing their long-term interests for transient benefits. Most of what we write is, at least potentially, useful and relevant in more than one place and for more than one moment. It is prudent for us not to use technology that treats our work as ephemeral or restricts anyone's access to it.
As academics, we are in a particularly good position to demonstrate this prudence, perspicacity, and good sense, by choosing whatever technology best suits our values and interests, rather than allowing the fashionable technology du jour to determine our practices.
