Manual update notifications

Yes, but I'm assuming that most of the people who are interested already have or will eventually acquire a feed aggregator (such as Sage) to take the place of the auto read list, so I doubt that I'll keep it up much longer. There's no reason why Plans couldn't examine my Atom feed to detect updates automatically, but I wouldn't expect that.
