Hacking gadflies

King, Laurie R. Locked rooms. New York: Bantam Books, 2005. ISBN 055380197X.

Summary: In 1924, an Anglo-American scholar and amateur detective who enjoys the mixed advantages of being married to Sherlock Holmes returns to her childhood home in San Francisco, intending to sell the house and the part-ownerships of some businesses that she inherited from her parents. Not surprisingly, she and Holmes discover that visiting the house brings back long-suppressed elements of her family history, including some unpleasant old secrets dating back to the 1906 earthquake.

Excellent characterization, a good sense of the period, attention to detail, and a well-thought-out plot make this one of the best of the Russell mysteries. The psychology of Mary's behavior -- in particular, her unwillingness to consider the implications of her own behavior -- is a bit heavy-handed but not entirely without foundation in the earlier books.
