Jones, Pamela. “Patent infringement lawsuits that involve FOSS.” Groklaw, August 10, 2005.

Summary: It's starting. J2 Global Communications, an intellectual-property lawsuit factory, owns a patent for “transmission and retrieval of facsimile and audio messages over a circuit or packet switched network,” and is suing several companies that sell fax-to-email services. At least two of the defendants are using free software to perform the conversion. These are the first patent-infringement lawsuits directly affecting free software.
