Hacking gadflies

Mooney, Chris C. The Republican war on science. New York: Basic Books, 2005.

Summary: An analysis of how conservative Republicans have managed to prevent the application of scientific knowledge in American policy-making and legislation, in four parts: a history of the rise of anti-science wingnuts, an account of the methods and legislative practices that Republicans have developed, a series of case studies (creationism, opposition to stem-cell research, and contraception), and a snapshot of the present situation. An epilogue discusses ways to reverse the Republicans' achievement: restoring the Office of Technology Assessment, repealing the so-called Data Quality Act, educating journalists and the public about science and scientific methods, and, of course, defeating Republicans at the polls.
