Eggen, Dan. “FBI papers indicate intelligence violations.” Washington Post, October 24, 2005.
Summary: The Federal Bureau of Investigation has abused the extraordinary powers that the USA PATRIOT act conferred on it. The Electronic Privacy Information Center sued under the Freedom of Information Act for records about these abuses and received partial records of thirteen such instances, including the unauthorized seizure of private bank records and some kind of “unconsented physical search,” the details of which were edited out by the FBI before they released the documents. Unidentified FBI officials described these events as “administrative errors.”
The numbering of the documents that were released suggests that there were at least 287 such episodes, probably more. The FBI claims that the rest were classified.
