Hacking gadflies

Jacoby, Susan. “Original intent.” Mother Jones, December/January 2006.

Summary: The religious right's claim that the separation of church and state is not based on the Constitution or does not reflect the values and ideals of the eighteenth-century founders of the American government is bogus and revisionist. It reflects the willful ignorance of the advocates of state-sponsored religion. The founders were quite familiar with the violence and oppression that characterize established religions and were uncomfortably aware of the attempts by religious fanatics of their own day to foment conflict.
