Kaplan, Esther. “A disaster for abstinence ideology.” Talk to action, May 25, 2006.

Summary: In Uganda, where the government's HIV-prevention efforts had been succeeding brilliantly until fundamentalist Christian nutcases converted the program from one that emphasized condom distribution to one that promotes abstinence as the sole prevention mechanism. As a result, the number of new HIV infections, which was 70,000 in 2003, rose in 2005 to 130,000.

The Ugandan fundamentalist Christian nutcases were funded and assisted the Bush administration and several non-governmental organizations run by American fundamentalist Christian nutcases, some of whom are being rewarded for their good work with appointments to the United States delegation to a UN conference on HIV. (In the past, delegates from the United States to similar conferences have generally been public-health officials.)
