Hacking gadflies

Von Lohmann, Fred, and Wendy Seltzer. “Death by DMCA.” IEEE spectrum, June, 2006.

Summary: The authors describe two important computer-electronics products that have been killed off by the passage and enforcement of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act: digital video recorders that skip commercials automatically (ReplayTV) and software for copying DVDs to one's hard drive (DVD X Copy). They provide a little bit of the history of similar devices in the pre-DMCA era, and describe the currently bleak prospects for the development of digital television tuners, digital audio recorders, and analog-to-digital converters.
