Brunner, John. The stardroppers. New York: Daw Books, 1972.
Summary: A new technological fad appears in Britain and the United States. Its inventor describes it a device for generating, and converting into sound, patterns of radiant energy similar to electromagnetic waves, but not locatable on the electromagnetic spectrum. Users of the device believe, for no particular reason, that it taps the thoughts of the inhabitants of other planets. After peeling away vast quantities of mystification and baloney, an investigator discovers that some particularly open-minded people who interact with the device can learn teleportation and telekinesis from it, though the mechanism remains incomprehensible. Considerately, the early adopters who acquire these unusual powers employ them, as in Vonnegut's “Report on the Barnhouse Effect,” to destroy the weaponry that would otherwise be used to assert exclusive control over the technology.
