Hacking gadflies

Edmundson, Mark. Why read?: on the uses of great writing. New York: Bloomsbury Publishing, 2004. ISBN 1-58234-425-6.

Summary: Liberally educated people should carefully read serious works of literature and history, which deepen their intelligence and understanding of the world and fit them for participation in democratic society.

I am sympathetic with the author's goals and with the means he advocates, but his arguments seem surprisingly weak and fail to take into account the requirements for participation in contemporary American society.
