Hacking gadflies

Jacobs, Jonnie. The only suspect. New York: Kensington Books, 2005. ISBN 0-7582-0800-6.

Summary: A doctor's wife disappears and is later found dead, having been strangled and stabbed. The doctor is suspected of the crime, arrested, and tried, but the jury cannot agree on a verdict and the prosecutors don't attempt to retry him. He moves to a different state, marries again, and tries to restart his life, with some success. Then his new wife disappears and is later found dead, murdered. Naturally, the doctor is once more suspected, and his prospects are very bleak until an unusually thorough detective tries to tie up some of the loose ends in the case and finds instead that it quickly unravels, exposing an implausibly complicated frame job.
