Chasman, Paul. The book of Bob: a novel. Newport, Oregon: Dancing Moon Press, 2005. ISBN 1-892076-17-9.
Summary: A satirical caricature of American religion and politics. God speaks to a below-average Joe, inspiring him to found an evangelistic religion and providing him with a new scripture to back it up. He is initially successful in transmitting the word to many people, giving direction to their lives and improving their outlook. Soon enough, however, there is a schism, and one side turns dark and authoritarian. There is a political struggle ending in a cataclysm. The survivors live happily ever after, but do not hear from God as often -- which is probably a good thing.
The style of the book is odd -- sprightly and apocalyptic at the same time, somewhat like Neal Stephenson's The Big U. The characters are largely stereotyped and goofy, and the satirical elements are so hyperbolic that it was difficult for me to stay with the book for long enough to enjoy it.
