Hacking gadflies

One moment

Walking from the Forum to my office a few minutes ago, I was brought up short: I glanced at the back of the small stone statue of Ganesh, which commemorates a student who was killed by bandits while traveling through northern India. Ganesh sits on a pedestal, perhaps two feet above the ground.

A few yards beyond Ganesh, lower on the gentle slope of the ground, is an irregular stone. Just when this stone was in line (from my point of view) with Ganesh, I saw a squirrel on top of this stone, completely immobile, standing on its hind legs and leaning slightly forward. I too halted. For a long moment, Ganesh and I watched the squirrel, and the squirrel watched us. Then it broke its stance and scrambled down.
