Escapism

This is the first anniversary of Hacking gadflies.

In reviewing the list of books and articles that I've read in the last year, it occurred to me that some of my own readers might wonder why I've wasted so much time on science-fiction novels and murder mysteries that are primarily escapism. Then I realized that the reason is fairly obvious from the character of the rest of the list.
