Philosophical Objections
Beyond basic definitional issues, the notion that computers might be able
to think also raises several philosophical objections.
Three of these objections include issues related to:
-
Free will
Intelligence includes our being able to make our own decisions.
-
Consciousness
We consciously think through arguments and approaches as we solve problems.
-
The symbol system hypothesis
Basically, processing in computers involves manipulating symbols; does
processing in the human brain go beyond symbol manipulation?
