CS2 requires vision:

• self-contained goals and value
• connect with students' interests:
  • intellectual challenge
  • interest in helping others/contributing to society
  • identification of career options
• focus on essential content

Content and pedagogy should support goals of course, curriculum, discipline of computer science:

• appropriate role for programming, written and oral skills
• examples valid for the long term, not just in current context — students should never have to unlearn example later, when they have more experience
• applications consistent with statements on the nature of CS
