Realities

• Almost every department wants: more faculty, more facilities, majors, etc.
• Deans must:
  • help move school toward strategic goals, priorities
  • consider the functioning the entire college
  • address multiple demands
  • resolve conflicts, address contention for facilities, allocate limited funds among competing interests

Deans need/appreciate Help

• Deans need to understand trends/realities within a discipline (e.g., starting salaries for new faculty, equipment needs, pedagogical trends)
• Important for Chairs to consider needs/opportunities from a college-wide view
  • How do departmental needs fit?
    • with activities in the professional community at large
    • with college goals, needs, opportunities
    • with departmental program
    • with work of individual faculty
  • Will collaboration allow Dean to help meet multiple college needs?
• Constructive approach often very helpful (at least as a start)
