Effectiveness

• When switched to this approach (using Pascal long ago — in fall 1992)

  • course covered about 20% more material
  • tests showed increased student understanding
  • enrolled students told their friends — enrollment increased modestly

• Approach popular with all students (women, men, international students, etc.)

• Students consistently take opportunities for extra credit by doing additional labs, individual programs

• Attrition from CS1 or accelerated CS2 rare (≤ 1 student per course section)
